SUMMER 2025 SCHEDULE
Our 2025 season was one of the busiest and most rewarding summers yet for the Cherry Grove Archives Collection Inc.

CGAC volunteers are always working on many levels to operate the Archives’ ever-growing collection of photos, movies, artifacts and ephemera…which means there are lots of steps taken before we can present our history through our various events and projects.

We launched a podcast in early May about the history, culture and lifestyle of Cherry Grove. Each episode tells the story of America’s first gay and lesbian town was created and how it has thrived over the years. Using audio from archival interviews, we hear the history of the Grove through the voices of those who helped create the iconic LGBTQ safe haven and those who are keeping it gay today.

Listen to season 1 of QUEER GROVE now. Season 2 available in February 2026.

In the spring Cherry Grove explodes with budding nature and returning residents, which was the perfect time to kick-off our summer of Artist Walking Tours with the work of Warren Boyd Wexler. His intense connection to our environment and the animals that inhabit the space year round, can be seen in his almost intimate photos of Fire Island floral and fauna.

Warren passed before his exhibition was erected, so it seemed appropriate to celebrate his life with this amazing display of his photography all over Cherry Grove.

The Artist Walking Tours that we have designed, takes viewers on a journey around the boardwalks to view large panels of the artist’s work, learn about their process and discover facts about Cherry Grove history.

By placing these vibrant and informative banners around the Grove with not only images and text, but interactive QR codes to hear audio and watch videos, people are able to interact with our community’s history on a whole new level.

Special thanks to the Memorial Fund for their sponsorship of the Art Walk Tours.

Koitz was our second artist featured during the 2025 Artist Walking Tour. His photos reflect the beauty of the natural environment, the various summer events and the people that come to Fire Island each year, to celebrate their sexuality and experience the liberation of being part of a queer community.

Susan Kravitz has been photographing in the Grove since the 70s and her images span decades and truly bring Cherry Grove history to life with her work. Capturing quiet moments in a tornado of flamboyance, finding glimmers of joy during the AIDS crisis, or snapping shots of drag queens of all kinds- Susan’s photos represent the heart of our history.

Our bi-annual Archives Show Weekend was featured three exciting topics for our exhibitions this year…the 50 years of House Blessings, the glamour and joy of the Doctors Fund Benefit Shows and the outstanding dedication of the Cherry Grove Fire Department.

Visitors were able to view exhibit in the historic Community House & Theater, peruse photo albums and memorabilia, as well as watch clips from past performances and short features on Grove legends such as Dominic DeSantis.

During the Archives Show Weekend we also launched the second edition printing of the photo book SAFE/HAVEN: Gay Life in 1950s Cherry Grove. Last summer we printed a limited amount and we overjoyed to sell out in just two weeks.

We know the images in the book are pivotal to understanding the full story of queer history, so it is very exciting to have more books available, to preserve our LGBTQ history.

The queens came out in full glam on Saturday evening of the Archives Show Weekend for the premiere screening of the newest CGAC Production “Making Miss Cherrys”, directed by Parker Sargent and featuring Sabel Scities. These films are not only important fundraisers for the Archives, they share the importance of our community’s legacy of pioneer drag and amazing entertainment.

As a gift to our supporters, “Making Miss Cherrys” will be available to screen online, but only through January 5th, 2026.

And there is no queen greater than Rose Levine (also known as Bob Levine), who was noted this year by the Guinness World Book of Records as being the World’s Oldest Performing Drag Queen.

This was also Bob’s 70th year of doing drag in Fire Island…so we were overjoyed to present an exhibition of “Rose Levine” with a screening of the documentary “Roseland: The Ballad of Bob Levine” and an exhibition of photos and videos from the countless shows and fundraisers that Bob has performed at over the years.

Bringing Cherry Grove together to celebrate one of its greatest icons was the perfect way to wrap up a sensational season...and though the summer is over, we are hard at work on all the "behind the scenes" projects to prepare for the exciting calendar of events we have planned for 2026.
