CGAC volunteers are always working on many levels to operate the Archives’ ever-growing collection of photos, movies, artifacts and ephemera…which means there are lots of steps taken before we can present our history through our various events and projects.
We launched a podcast in early May about the history, culture and lifestyle of Cherry Grove. Each episode tells the story of America’s first gay and lesbian town was created and how it has thrived over the years. Using audio from archival interviews, we hear the history of the Grove through the voices of those who helped create the iconic LGBTQ safe haven and those who are keeping it gay today.
Listen to season 1 of QUEER GROVE now. Season 2 available in February 2026.
Warren passed before his exhibition was erected, so it seemed appropriate to celebrate his life with this amazing display of his photography all over Cherry Grove.
By placing these vibrant and informative banners around the Grove with not only images and text, but interactive QR codes to hear audio and watch videos, people are able to interact with our community’s history on a whole new level.
Special thanks to the Memorial Fund for their sponsorship of the Art Walk Tours.
Koitz was our second artist featured during the 2025 Artist Walking Tour. His photos reflect the beauty of the natural environment, the various summer events and the people that come to Fire Island each year, to celebrate their sexuality and experience the liberation of being part of a queer community.
Visitors were able to view exhibit in the historic Community House & Theater, peruse photo albums and memorabilia, as well as watch clips from past performances and short features on Grove legends such as Dominic DeSantis.
We know the images in the book are pivotal to understanding the full story of queer history, so it is very exciting to have more books available, to preserve our LGBTQ history.
As a gift to our supporters, “Making Miss Cherrys” will be available to screen online, but only through January 5th, 2026.
This was also Bob’s 70th year of doing drag in Fire Island…so we were overjoyed to present an exhibition of “Rose Levine” with a screening of the documentary “Roseland: The Ballad of Bob Levine” and an exhibition of photos and videos from the countless shows and fundraisers that Bob has performed at over the years.
