SAFEHAVEN EXHIBITION

The Safehaven Exhibition explores the gay and lesbian community that flourished during the 1950s in Cherry Grove through some 70+ photographs and additional ephemera from the unique holdings of the Cherry Grove Archives Collection.

Curators Brian Clark, Susan Kravitz and Parker Sargent selected a collection of amazing photographs that reflect the environment, gaiety and lifestyle of Cherry Grove during the McCarthy era. This rare glimpse at queer joy in a time of persecution is incredibly unique and provides us with a deeper understanding of LGBTQIA+ history in Fire Island and beyond.
