Lorraine H. Michels is a photographer who has been documenting life in Cherry Grove for over two decades.
A native Long Islander, Lorraine grew up in North Babylon, taught in Lindenhurst and has spent summers in Cherry Grove since 1993 when she met her life partner, Joan Van Ness. Joan had been visiting the Grove since 1976 and became a homeowner in 1979.
Lorraine began photographing the community at the 1994 Invasion of the Pines and it seems like she hasn't put her camera down since; documenting all the various pageants, fundraisers, parades and wildlife that makes Cherry Grove such a unique and cherished queer space.
